The "Wednesday Phew"

"Wednesday Phew "[wenz-dey-fyoo]

Your scrap metal is not safe in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, and the Vancouver Sun and CBC have the footage, and headline, to prove it.

In a risky covert operation two reporters dressed like petty criminals, unshaven and with hoods, hauled off with $15 and $5 in cash respectively from their stolen scrap metal. This brazen criminal activity was executed without showing the proper government issued identification.

Now a major headline across B.C., everyone is now aware of the fact the new by-law aimed at curbing such activities is not being enforced. Combine this with the fact commodity prices are at an all time high for the metal being stolen, and it is clear both the Vancouver Sun and CBC have won a small battle for the "little guy." However, the dealers do not agree that this is a war these two creators of headlines can win no matter the embarrassment they put on the government. While speaking with the Vancouver Sun, Terry McHale, the owner of West Coast Recycling in Langley, stated he feels the situation is actually impossible to deter.

"Theft has been going on since the dawn of time, since Jesus was in diapers. And you are not going to stop it.” credit Vancouver Sun.

No matter the differing opinions, this expose has helped to get more exposure to the by-law put into place to ensure your government issued identification was shown when you are selling scrap metal. We have also been shown that if you refuse, you run the risk of not being able to watch your scrap thrown into a large untagged pile before being recycled, and leaving no trace whatsoever of what it was that you had "sold."

Phew, just when you thought the real root of the thefts was the high level of poverty and addiction rampant in the Lower Mainland. Let’s score another one for mainstream media and their ability to find the real issues the government should focus their time and money on. As always, whether this is worthy of a “Wednesday Phew” moment, sarcastic or not, that is up to you. See you next week!

BTW: I should point out my definition of "little guy" is Telus Communications, a company that has annual revenues in excess of $10 billion dollars.
