"Wednesday Phew" [wenz-dey-fyoo]
definition: A moment that brought a sigh of relief, sarcastic or not.
"Pigeons create GPS from Earth's Magnetic Field."
In a finding released this week, which can be read in full at Discovery.com, it was revealed that the brain of a pigeon uses the Earth's magnetic field in a way that gives them their own built in 'Tom Tom.' The findings have also led some scientists to point out that many other of earth's flying creatures may also have similar 'Garmin' systems built right in. The positive response from the scientific field has been overwhelming;
"Birds give us a unique opportunity to study how the brain develops these spatial maps and the receptors that feed into it because they have such a great ability to navigate,"
"This is a great example of science at work."
"...it will no doubt inspire much additional work in the future.”
Whether worthy of a 'Wednesday Phew' moment, sarcastic or not, that is up to you to decide. But if you need swaying one way or the other, take a look at what our world would look like without these built in navigation systems.
